Hello Monday were approached by Telekom with a ‘simple’ task. Create a WOW experience. We immediately thought about the phone and how, with the rise of technology, we've become so connected online yet so disconnected in person. We set out to create a tool that could encourage face to face interaction.
Our challenge and key goal was to push for technology companies to take social responsibility. Would a car company create a steering wheel without airbags? NO! We wanted technology companies to demonstrate how they could be socially responsible and protect their users. How could we make humans more connected offline without having to forfeit the benefits of the phone?
Being alone together
Most of us use more than one device, and we are spending on average more than half our time in front of a screen. We’re afraid of missing out on something truly great so we stay online and forget to look up and enjoy real life.
We've become accustomed to a new way of being “alone together” and what was supposed to bring us closer, now creates distance from each other. We don’t want to drop our devices and stay offline all day, because being online is not a bad thing. But how do we stay connected? Not Wifi connected or social media connected, but face connected. Smile connected and real-life conversation connected.
That’s why we developed the NOMO - a device that helps you be present in the moments that matter. NOMO stands for No One Missing Out. It's a playful tool that rewards you every time you spend time offline. It helps raise the question of when do we want to be online or offline, in any kind of social situation. It empowers you to care about your time, how you want to spend it and where you want your focus to be. It sets people free to be more present and less dependent on their phone.
How do we stay connected?
We got the idea for NOMO, when we saw how people stacked their phones on the table in restaurants. The stacking game is simple: The first person to grab their phone pays the bill for the whole table. And we saw a potential. The principle for NOMO is the same; you stack all your phones and then it tracks how much time you spend offline. You will be rewarded with points, while you can enjoy the moment. Challenge your family to a phone-free Sunday, have a friendly dinner competition or spend quality time with your co-workers. NOMO holds all your devices, so you can keep your hands free. Stack them up and let NOMO track your time offline. The menu offers three features you can swipe between: Challenge, On the Go and Countdown.
01.Challenge: This feature allows you to choose a pre-set challenge to earn points. It's perfect for a Sunday where the whole family can be offline together. One by one, you connect all devices by tapping the + icon on the interface. When all devices are connected you put down the interface to start the game and then a countdown is displayed.
02.Countdown: This feature allows you to have a fixed timeframe, but different from Challenge, you define the timeframe yourself. This is especially good for meetings where you want people to be present and not constantly checking their email.
03.On the go: This feature allows you to track your time unlimited, so NOMO tracks time as long as it is activated. When all devices are removed the game will stop and show a summary of how much time you have been offline.
Designing a prototype
The NOMO is designed to be a device you want to place in the middle of a table, surrounded by people. It comes in two sizes - a home edition, with two parts, the interface and the station plus a smaller version that is more travel friendly. The larger version is perfect for keeping at home, so the whole family knows where the ‘device parking spot’ is. It charges your device and works for both tablets and phones. Another practical benefit is that it's a lot easier to find shared devices, as they are no longer spread around the whole house.
Vision
Our vision with NOMO is simple and it’s easy to imagine how to scale the concept. We could make location based challenges and see a huge potential in other businesses feeding NOMO with challenges or unique experiences. Imagine restaurants offering a NOMO menu, and if you complete all courses with your phone on NOMO you will get a 10% discount off the normal price?
Imagine a world where an intimate experience, like a concert, could be possible without mobile phones or selfies? Where you viewed the experience through your eyes and not through your lense.
Small steps to reconnect the way we interact with real humans in real life.
